Privacy, Glass Houses, and Artistic Expressions

Zinc Building New York CityArt has always been perceived as being somewhat un-definable in nature. Art can be seen in just about everything in life depending on the person. Like beauty, art is also in the eyes of the beholder.

But what happens when one person looks at something as art and but then this art is not perceived the same way by others? Well, most would say this is a personal problem and for people to not look upon art that they find offensive, right? Well, when it comes to being unknowingly photographed in your home, things tend to get ugly and some feel it is a direct invasion of privacy.

In recent news, a couple living in New York City became enraged when they learned that a photographer, a famous one at that, had been photographing them while they were going about their daily routines in their home. The photographer, Arne Svenson, a  renowned fine-art photographer from California, did not see it this way and pictures of this couple ended up in his latest series called “The Neighbors”.

Up until this point this story would seem to be an open and shut case of who is right and who is very wrong in the situation. However, the courts did not see it this way when the couple sued Arne Svenson in 2013.

Interestingly enough, it is pertinent to point that the couple lived in a glass house. They lived in a real-life, glass home located in the Zinc Building in Tribeca. The interior of the home is clearly visible not only for the couple who sued the photographer, but also for the hundreds of other people who chose to live in the same glass box-like building.

The charges that were brought up against the photographer were dismissed not based on the fact that the couple lived with seemingly little cares for privacy, but because it is not illegal to look into peoples windows in New York City. The court also found that the work was protected as “artistic expression” under the First Amendment.

This is not the first outrage to come from people who felt that their privacy was invaded in the name of art. It has been growing at a rather fast pace in recent years. Some artists and privacy advocates say this is because we are living  the “death of privacy” era. This death of privacy is strongly supported by the rapid expansion and reach of growing technologies today.

Trevor Pagien photo of NSAAnother very interesting spin on surveillance art came from photographer, Trevor Paglen, who fancied himself a conspiracy theorist in years past. The photographer said he felt mixed emotions about the Snowden leaks that rocked the world. He said he had always been interested in “watching the watchers” and wanted to add faces to the secretive nameless we only hear about in the news.

He took it upon himself to illuminate them and “spy on the spies”. Paglen’s photographs depicted the activities of two major secret intelligence agencies and the NSA. The photographer later shared these images online as part of a series in the Creative Times Reports.

Opinions on the matter of surveillance art and privacy concerns are very dependent on each persons individual feelings on the matters of privacy. Many feel there is no wrong or right when it comes to one’s personal preferences on the matter as long as no laws are broken in the name of capturing art.

The Synergistic Movement of Crowdsourcing Art

Crowdsource Art featured at TED 2014

“Crowdsourcing is creating something that’s greater than the sum of its parts.”

While the concept of crowdsourcing is not exactly new, the public knowledge of this movement s picking up notable speed among many all over the world.Crowdsourcing, not to be confused with crowdfunding (crowdfunding being the act of many people contributing funds to support an idea or project that needs funding to become a reality), is an art movement that is gaining public attention in big ways.

Crowdsourcing is a form of art creation that can only be accomplished by the collaboration of many; many people, with many talents, having many different visions, and often participating for many different purposes all with one singular goal; to connect, contribute, and create something meaningful. This in itself is a breathtaking notion. A notion that has many otherwise un-related groups of people coming together as one.  ARTnews said it beautifully in their most recent coverage on the crowdsourcing art movement,

“Crowdsourced art is about inclusiveness, turning formerly passive audiences into active creators and empowering people who aren’t normally part of the art world…thousands of free man-hours to artists…. enabling them to realize projects of stupendous magnitude.”

Crowdsourcing art is when an artist or group of artists enlist the help of others to work with them in completion of a piece of art or project. The beauty behind crowdsourcing is the truly unique quality that is generated by the variety of people working together on one project. Its uniqueness comes from the final artworks irreplicable components that were brought to life by the unpredictable nature of different audiences with different artistic abilities.

These artist-orchestrated projects can be seen all over the world in museums, galleries, public spaces, and online.  Recently, crowdsourcing art was commissioned for the popular TED conference to celebrate it’s 30th anniversary. TED is an extraordinary nonprofit devoted to sharing ideas worth spreading and the crowdsourced art was a perfect fit for this celebration.

It can be said that the  crowdsourced-art movement reflects a very basic and essential human need in people to connect with others and to do so in tangible, meaningful way.

Fascinating Art Aquarium Draws Atttention in Tokyo

tokyo art aquarium newsThe latest craze to hit the art scene is drawing the attention of many and rightfully so.  An Art Aquarium in Tokyo, Japan has captured the attention of art lovers as well as Tokyo’s general population otherwise neutral to the art world . The Art Aquarium is called Hidetomo Kimura’s Art Aquarium. This art aquarium offers an highly unique  experience by mixing contemporary art, Japanese culture, and Tokyo, Japans popular nightlife scene.

Hidetomo Kimura’s Art Aquarium is a very popular annual exhibit that draws vastly different walks of life to the exhibition each year; over 300 million visitors already. Visitors to the display enjoy cocktails, view custom-designed fishtanks ignited with superb lighting effects which highlight the tanks filled with exotic goldfish. In the background, a DJ is on sight spinning tunes.

The Art Aquarium is located within Nihombashi Mitsui Hall and is put on by Artist and Producer, Kimura. Worth pointing out is that Kimura is also noted as being an“Aquartist”.  Kimura is highly regarded for his exhibit of over 5000 “bizarrely beautiful” fish all contently displaying in  fish tanks which are penetrated and highlighted by deployments of colorful light. During the start of the art aquarium show, Kimura states that, “Beyond the technology that catches people’s heart, there lies natural beauty this earth has created”; the Kingyo goldfish.

So who are the stars of this exhibit? The fish are. In Japanese culture, the goldfish, Kingyo, has always been a very cherished form of art to the culture. Dating back to 1502 the Kingyo goldfish was imported in China and from there made it’s way into the Japanese culture. Initially the Kingyo was only available to the wealthy and elite who cherished the unique and strange features of the fish. Owners of the rare breed of goldfish would later go on to emphasize and ultimately exaggerate the goldfish’s features by breeding the fish to create even more pronounced characteristics. These characteristics are features such as the Kingyo’s bulging eyes, puffy cheeks and wrinkled foreheads.

The inspiration for this art display is derived from the deep traditional practices in the Japanese culture.

About Manss Aval

A naturalist, Manss has dedicated much of his time studying wildlife. Through a juxtaposition of images his work captivates movements in time and space, creating enchanted sceneries with animals at center stage. In his recent Eden series, for instance, presents seemingly futile avian attempts to evade environmental infernos of a disintegrating planet.

His Heron Dreams series orchestrates the grace, agility and elegance of these birds into evocative, dramatic, romantic, sometime surreal symphonies of pure natural beauty. His works levitate between fantasy and mysterious quantum space, leaving the viewer in meditative explorations of familiar memories, dreams and perhaps alien realities. To experience the full impact of his works they have to be viewed in life-size large format: the herons then fully emerge as playful, strong and sensitive individuals whom one cannot avoid to adore and respect. The series Through the Looking Glass is an intriguing journey into a realm where imagination ostensibly morphs into reality.

His fine art and photographic work has been exhibited at over 30 juried group and solo shows in San Diego, Pasadena, Florence, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Toronto and Merida. He is recipient of many national and international awards and his work has appeared in a number of publications.

Just recently Manss Aval was featured down on Times Square in NYC on two of the largest billboards for the #seemetakeover art display on July 24th.

Impressions

ImpressionsBeach Cobbles Impressions Fine Art are a style of art that captures the image of an object as someone would see it if they just caught a glimpse of it. Impressionist artist generally paint the pictures with a lot of color and often times the pictures capture outdoor scenes.

Impression art is usually very bright and vibrant. This type of art originated in the late 1800s, in Paris, and eventually started the Impressionism movement.  Impressionism styles of art are characterized by small, quick brush strokes and bright vibrant colors.

Impressionist painting strives to re-create a person’s or the artist’s general impression of a place or a scene. The purpose of impressions artwork is to convey experience by capturing fleeting impressions of reality or of a mood. So, essentially it is capturing the impression given and relaying this impression perceived into an art form, such as painting.

Naturescapes

Naturescapes are used to highlight a particular
element of nature, regardless of the surrounding setting.

Naturescapes are beautiful depictions of natures landscapes, highlighting how truly extravagant our natural world is. Naturescapes are a very popular form of art  because of their ability to bring the beauty out in something very simple and often overlooked; sky, clouds, ocean, mountains, leaves and all things naturally occurring in natures landscaping.
