Fine Art Maya Gallery -Disambiguation“Disambiguation”

There are so many different expressions and styles of art that it would be nearly impossible for a complete presentation of all the art styles in one article. For the purpose of this post, we will focus on just four styles of art featured at Fine Art Maya.

Flora

Flora art is a type of art that captures all plant life occurring in an area or from a time period, especially the naturally occurring or indigenous plant life. Flora is from the Latin language, Flora.  In ancient Roman mythology it means “the goddess of flowers”.

Fauna

Fauna is a style of art that depicts animal life in a given area. Fauna refers to all of the animal life of any particular region or time-frame in nature.

The name Fauna comes from a Roman fertility and earth goddess, the Roman God Faunus, and the related forest spirits called “Fauns”.

Impressions

ImpressionsBeach Cobbles Impressions Fine Art are a style of art that captures the image of an object as someone would see it if they just caught a glimpse of it. Impressionist artist generally paint the pictures with a lot of color and often times the pictures capture outdoor scenes.

Impression art is usually very bright and vibrant. This type of art originated in the late 1800s, in Paris, and eventually started the Impressionism movement.  Impressionism styles of art are characterized by small, quick brush strokes and bright vibrant colors.

Impressionist painting strives to re-create a person’s or the artist’s general impression of a place or a scene. The purpose of impressions artwork is to convey experience by capturing fleeting impressions of reality or of a mood. So, essentially it is capturing the impression given and relaying this impression perceived into an art form, such as painting.

Naturescapes

Naturescapes are used to highlight a particular
element of nature, regardless of the surrounding setting.

Naturescapes are beautiful depictions of natures landscapes, highlighting how truly extravagant our natural world is. Naturescapes are a very popular form of art  because of their ability to bring the beauty out in something very simple and often overlooked; sky, clouds, ocean, mountains, leaves and all things naturally occurring in natures landscaping.

Tips for Hanging Fine Art in the Home

tips for hanging fine art in the homeSelecting a Frame

If your artwork is the type that needs a frame, like a print or maybe a specific painting, make sure to be selective in choosing the appropriate frame for your piece of art.

If the frame is “stronger” or “louder” in appearance  than the actual artwork,  you could essentially detract from the potential of the art itself. The frame should only be an enhancement for the artwork, not draw the full focus of someones attention.

Selecting a Perfect Display Spot

It’s important to note that there really is no wrong or right way to display your artwork. It’s really what makes you happy in the end. According to Mark Leithauser, the senior curator and director of design at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, “Display of art is subjective”….”there is no right or wrong way to do it”. He goes on to say that, ”Art in the end should be pleasing to you first, and the rest of the world second.”
Most typically, it’s best to start by standing in the general area where you plan on hanging the art and visualizing how the art would look.  Take your time though. Creativity comes best naturally when you take time to imagine different possibilities. One you have a general idea of its destination, you can proceed.

Understand the Weight of the Artwork and What is Needed

Do not hang fine art with just nails hammered into a wall. Make sure that you understand what is appropriate for your specific kind of artwork. You can either ask for recommendations from the Artist or Art Gallery in which you purchased it. Or you can also refer to the picture hanging hooks or brackets packaging for the suggested weight thresholds.
Use picture hooks or brackets. Again, be sure you have the appropriate wire for the weight of your art.
Use D-rings for heavier pieces of art. Generally, the packaging of the D-rings will include the manufactures recommended weight guidelines. Follow these! There’s nothing worse than causing damage to your artwork AND the wall simultaneously.

Get Your Art Hanging Tools Together

Get all your tools for the job together before you start. This way, you won’t find yourself stuck on a ladder, holding your precious artwork and then realizing you need a hammer… Most commonly, these are the tools needed to hang fine art like a pro:

  • Wire, Wall hooks, Brackets or D-Ring Hangers
  • Hammer Pencil
  • Level
  • Measuring tape

Measuring and Hanging the Artwork

Mark the center:
Find the center point of where you plan on the picture going. Mark this center point with your pencil.

Get measurements:
Measure from the hangable area (top of the area where the art will hang from, not the top of the picture) to the bottom of the hangable area. Do this top to bottom and another measurement from left to right. Remember that frames sometimes can be misleading with measuring the hangable area of the picture itself. Don’t include anything but measurements from the places that are actually going to make contact with the screws, nails, or hanging brackets themselves.

Mark the wall:
Use the measuring tape and these measurements and place marks on the wall with the pencil indicating where the picture will hang.

Measure and mark for any special wall hanging hooks, brackets, d-rings or wires. Keep in mind that if the picture has wire hanging, the wire should be taunt enough so that it will not show above the picture once it is hung.

Use a level:
Use the level to make sure that marked spots on the wall are level. This will ensure that your artwork will hang evenly.

Drive in screws or hanging fixtures:
Once everything is level, go ahead and place your screws or nails in the wall and carefully hang your artwork.

That should do it! If you are worried about hanging professional artwork yourself, it may be best to go ahead and choose your location for the piece and then hire a professional to hang it for you.

Making Waves in Your Neighborhood

RANCHO SANTA FE — The Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild member and Rancho Santa Fe resident Manss Aval, has been selected as one of the artists to show at the 2013 Juried Biennial Exhibition at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery, in the Carlsbad City Library complex, 1775 Dove Lane, Carlsbad. Artwork by Aval is also on display at the Rancho Santa Fe Gallery, 6004 Paseo Delicias, through Jan. 5.The 2013 Juried Biennial Exhibition will be held at the Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad from Jan. 20 to March 9. Aval has dedicated much of his time studying nature and wildlife. As his primary medium, he concentrates on photography and mixed media techniques. Through a juxtaposition of images his work captivates movements in time and space, creating enchanted sceneries with animals at center stage. His Heron Dreams series orchestrates the grace, agility and elegance of these birds into evocative, dramatic, romantic, sometime surreal symphonies of pure natural beauty. To experience the full impact of his works, they should be viewed in life-sized large format.

Aval’s art and photographic work has been exhibited at the Museum of the Living Artist, San Diego, the Rancho Santa Fe Gallery, the La Jolla Art Gallery, as well as in many other San Diego as well as other national and international venues.

Should an artist employ a sales rep?

Should an artist employ a sales rep? Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild members consider…

It wasn’t easy being green for Kermit the Frog and it isn’t easy getting greenbacks through selling art, according to Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild members at the group’s winter show opening.

Guild members agreed most contemporary artists who haven’t established an enormous reputation (i.e. 99.9 percent of artists) generally establish themselves at one, or two, local galleries; or show, and sell, through an art guild or club. Otherwise, it’s not like literature or the music business where agents and reps are able to create careers, sometimes even demand.

Longtime art guild officer Cindy Klong had several pieces at the winter show, a valuable opportunity to display and publicize her efforts, she said. She also maintains online galleries and shows at other galleries.

Unfortunately, the chance to connect directly with audiences through galleries is becoming ever rarer, said Barbara Dawson, who owned galleries in La Jolla and Del Mar before returning to full-time curating and creating.

Economic conditions have caused most art collectors to pare down on purchases while rising property values have forced galleries into costly rental situations resulting in cutbacks and closures, Dawson said.

Long story short, unless you’re in the $50,000+ per piece sales category, the best way to succeed and sell, for now,  is do it yourself, guild members say, which means aligning with a guild, group and gallery. Then, see if you can take it up a notch from there, fate willing and the Visigoths don’t rise.

As for the rest of the story, the new show was OK, the wine was good. They need to do a better job on appetizers and have healthy choices rather than pigs-in-a-blanket mini-hot dog cuisine. In other words, stay classy Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild.

And wait, here’s more, straight from the art guild’s mouth:

The Art of the Jewel

Location: Charles Koll Jewelers Fashion Valley
Event Dates: 5/17/2012 –

San Diego artist Duke Windsor has taken inspiration from fine custom jewelry created and designed by Charles Koll Jewellers and developed the Jewel Series, a collection of acrylic paintings that are impeccably draped with signature pieces of custom jewelry. Charles Koll Jewellers and Salazar Contemporary Art Exhibits will be unveiling these unique works of art with an artist reception where guests will have an exclusive opportunity to meet with the jewelry design team and master artist Duke Windsor.

Art and music have always played an influential role in Duke Windsor’s life, but he had never thought much about finding inspiration in a jewelry store.

“I would have never guessed before walking into Charles Koll Jewellers that I would have been so inspired,” said Windsor. “After meeting Malcolm Koll, the owner of Charles Koll Jewellers, and really getting an understanding for the amount of detail that goes into every custom piece, I began to imagine how our work could merge to create something totally unique that highlights the qualities of both.”
